In 1842, at the age of 24, Jerome Increase Case started the J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company in Rochester, Wisconsin, soon moving
to Racine, Wisconsin as his business grew. The company was to become the largest manufacturer of threshing machines in the world, building more than 90,000 in the years up to 1920.
The first steam traction engine built by Case was produced in 1876, one of 76 built that year. 1884 saw their first direct flue boilered traction engine, with hand steering and differentials.
Traction engine production continued up to 1924, by which time the company had produced over 35,000 steam engines, ranging from 5hp up to 150hp.
